Affordability & Open Educational Resources (OER)

OER: Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials that are either (a) in the public domain or (b) licensed in a manner that provides everyone with free and perpetual permission to engage in the 5R activities.

  • Consider creating a course pack: email packets@byu.edu for assistance.
  • Submit course materials requests early for best prices.
  • Consider inclusive access.
  • Use a textbook for multiple semesters, thus reducing the rental cost.

OER


There are three ways you can use OER.
  • Adopt: Use open content without modification
  • Adapt: Making changes, compiling, eliminating
  • Create: Make new open content to share

According to David Wiley there are five things you can do with OER:

  • Revise
  • Reuse
  • Remix
  • Retain
  • Redistribute

OER are licensed with a Creative Commons license. Here is a list of the licenses (from most permissive to most restrictive).
